An evening of banter and revelry in Thane escalated into a night where blood was drawn on Saturday. A father-son duo was booked for murder by the Mumbra cops; while the son is absconding, the father was arrested when his friend, an eye-witness, gave a statement to the police.

Naresh Bhagat, a man in his fifties, was drinking alcohol with four friends in a hut near Reliance tower at Mumbra devi colony in Thane on Saturday evening. The friends have been identified as A Athavle, Naresh Bhagat, Ravindra Kadam and one more man from a nearby area.

Over the course of the evening, Naresh kept insisting for another bottle of alcohol, and an argument ensued between him and Athavle.

Irked with his behaviour, Athavle shoved his friend, at which point Naresh lost his temper and threatened of dire consequences, saying that Athavle would 'pay the price' for pushing him.

Naresh ran towards a Chinese food stall where his son Nikhil was standing, and narrated the fight to him. Seeing his father injured, an enraged Nikhil picked up a favda (farming tool) that was lying nearby and charged towards the area where his father's friends were.

Nikhil, an unemployed youth in his twenties, didn't see Athavle anywhere and demanded to meet him. None of the other friends paid heed to him, and an irate Nikhil became verbally violent.

Seated at a nearby table, Kishore Dhanji Parmar, another man in his fifties, asked Nikhil to quieten down. Already furious that Athavle was nowhere around, Nikhil struck Parmar on his head with the spade. He then dropped the weapon and disappeared from the spot.

Seeing this, Kadam rushed a bleeding Parmar to a nearby hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival. The police was informed, and since Kadam was an eye-witness, they recorded his statement.

Naresh was promptly arrested, while Nikhil is still absconding. Both men have been charged under IPC Section 302 (punishment for murder).

An officer with Mumbra police said: “We are tracking Nikhil through his mobile phone, and will arrest him soon. Kishore had nothing to do with the quarrel, and was killed through no fault of his own.”

The officer added that Athavle is also missing and further investigations are on.
