Despite Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) claiming to have taken all necessary measures to keep water-borne diseases at bay, a fresh case of dengue has been reported at DY Patil Hospital in Nerul. The patient is a 24-year-old resident of Koparkhairane.

“Faraz Ahmed Sheikh was admitted to the general medicine department of our hospital on Monday. According to the tests conducted by a pathology laboratory at Koparkhairane, he is confirmed to have contracted the disease, and we are treating him accordingly. We have also collected his blood samples and sent them for verification. His reports are still awaited,” an official from DY Patil Hospital said.

“Last Friday, after I got fever, I immediately went to see my family doctor at Koparkhairane. He examined me and gave some medicines, but it didn’t help so my family decided to move me to the DY Patil Hospital on Monday. There the doctors took my blood samples and sent it for testing. The blood test report has confirmed dengue,” Sheikh said.

He added that after his family doctor examined him, he (the doctor) also found out that Sheikh’s platelet count was low which made him suspicious that Sheikh had contracted the disease. “I am feeling better now and doctors at the DY Patil Hospital are taking utmost care of me,” he said.

When contacted, an official from NMMC’s health department pleaded ignorance.
“No dengue case has occurred in the satellite city. There were two patients, but they were from Vithalwadi in Kalyan and Pen in Raigad district. There was no such patient within NMMC jurisdiction,” the official said.

However, the DY Patil Hospital official said they had informed NMMC officials immediately after Faraz’s report confirmed dengue. “We had called the official from Nerul primary health centre to inform him about the patient,” the official said.
