In a display of high-handedness, a Railway constable beat up a youth who hurriedly boarded a ladies compartment on a suburban train, the last Virar local, on the intervening night of Monday-Tuesday between Kandivali and Borivali. Even more, the constable left female commuters at Dahisar without any security for the rest of the journey to Virar. To top it, GRP commissioner Ravindra Singhal, to whom dna sought a reaction on action taken, wondered why the question is directed at him.

The train was last Virar local that chugs out at 12.50 am from Churchgate and the Government Railway Police (GRP) constable in question was posted in the 'First Class Ladies Compartment' of the Virar end of the train.
As the train started moving at Kandivali station, the youth in his 20s missed getting into general second class compartment. In order to not miss the last train, in a huff he boarded the next door that happened to be 'First Class Ladies Compartment'.

Realising his mistake, he stood at the gate; that is when the GRP constable called him (see picture). The moment the youth came near, the constable started beating him up despite the latter trying to convince the cop that his boarding the wrong compartment was by mistake and not intentional.

This correspondent was witness to the incident, even as the women commuters kept on asking and shouting at the constable to spare the male commuter, but in vain.

Finally, they pulled emergency chain and GRP officers from Borivali station took the victim along, but allowed the constable to continue duty on train.

However, the GRP constable got off just after a station passed, at Dahisar, without even deputing alternate personnel to provide security for female commuters for the remaining 30-minute journey between Dahisar and Virar.

The same constable (name not known because of winter wear covering his name tag) had asked a woman passenger (whose looks didn't match the rest of the commuters) between Khar and Santacruz to get off the train and even threatened to throw her belongings out of the train.

When checked with Borivali GRP if any case has been registered, the officer on duty denied any mention of the incident in any of their official registers. Whereas Singhal reacted, "You are asking me about it? I cannot say till I verify about it for which you will have to give me a written complaint first."
