An ode to all things Mumbai, The Bombay Bronx, gives you a peek into the city's grimy streets
  • Food served on a carrom board ups the quirk element

Akriti SkyBay in Breach Candy is known to be a space where food joints find it hard to survive. Coffee shops, restaurants…have all died out without a trace. Hoping to buck the trend is Kishore DF and Nakul Kumar's latest bar and restaurant—The Bombay Bronx. This place has a good chance of seducing residents, since, other than a tiny scraping of restaurants, Breach Candy's dining scene is nothing but a joyless affair.

The Bombay Bronx owns every kitschy detail that is clichéd Mumbai—an Eros Cinema mural, a Mumbai railway map, etc. There's even half an auto rickshaw at the entrance, which the press note describes as "the new selfie point for Mumbaikars". Diners sit down on Irani café-style bentwood chairs at round tables. At their feet lie stacks of tiffins, a paean to the city's dabbawalas, and an enormous painting of Amitabh Bachchan which glowers at the crowd.

Think Aam Panna Margarita, Kokam Sour and the much-feted Paani Puri Caipirojka. According to Kumar, "The Bombay Bronx offers a happy Bombay ambience with Bombay street flavour inspired cocktails and street food that every Mumbaikar craves for." While the cooking may not compare favourably to that of your favourite thelawala, where else can you eat a Mumbai sandwich lounging on a bentwood chair, sipping an iced Peru cocktail and listening to hip-hop?
