If you have plans of getting married, this is for you. A bill which proposes imprisonment up to three years and a fine of Rs. 1 lakh for having lavish weddings is in the offing.
This bill plans to introduce a ceiling on the expenditure allowed on weddings. Those who violate this, will have to face punishment. The bill, prepared by the Bharatiya Janata Party's Girish Bapat, has reportedly drawn limitations on money that can be spent on gifts, food, decoration and fireworks.
Recently, NCP leader Bhaskar Jadhav's extravagant spending on his son's wedding was criticised. NCP supremo Sharad Pawar had also expressed disapproval. Navi Mumbai deputy mayor Ashok Gawde had also spent a lot of money on his daughter's wedding. The insensitivity of such spending, given that western Maharashtra was reeling under a severe drought, had drawn a lot of flak.
