In the wake of increasing incidents of theft on long-distance trains, Yatra Samithi Mumbai and Thane have taken an initiative to distribute 10,000 handbills to commuters as part of awareness programme for two days.

Shashi Kumar Nair, chairman of the Samithi, said, "There has been an increase in the cases in the past few months on long-distance trains. So, to make people aware of the problem, we have made plans to distribute handbills highlighting safety measures to be taken while travelling."

Safe journey, pleasant journey handbill was distributed at Thane station to passengers on board long-distance LTT Kochuveli Superfast Express on Wednesday. "Today, handbills will be distributed to passengers of Netravati and Duranto Express. The handbills have been printed in both English and Malyalam for the convenience of commuters," added Nair.

A detailed 12-point handbills have been printed, which talks about safe journey and rights of the passengers. The Samithi members said though the Railways has initiated many programmes for the benefit of passengers, which also includes not entertaining unauthorised travellers in reserved compartment, immediate complaint should be filed and authorities should take action.

The initiative has received an overwhelming response from commuters and they have welcomed the Samithi's move to educate passengers about their rights.

"Of late, I was travelling by Duranto Express and a person entered in the compartment. Though he didn't carry any bona fide ticket, he also started troubling people around. I immediately took action and sent a message about the issue, but like me not everyone is aware of their rights. So, handbill will prove as an effective tool in educating passengers," said Rajendra P, a commuter.

The handbill also gives details of emergency contact numbers, which can be used by everyone. A Samithi member said, "Our sole aim is to educate and make people aware of their rights and put a tab on increasing incidents happening on regularly on long-distance trains. This is how commuters can make a difference by acting smart and being aware."
