Worli societies still owe BMC R4crore in taxes

Even though the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation razed the illegal alterations and constructions carried out by politicians residing at Worli's high-profile Shubhada-Sukhada cooperative housing societies, the civic body is yet to recover property taxes, and a few others, roughly amounting to Rs4 crore.

The civic G-south ward is currently in the process of calculating the exact amount of the outstanding dues, and they are expected to arrive at the figure in the next few weeks.

Sources said that the societies had initially applied for revision after it came to light that a tax amount of nearly Rs16crore was due from both the societies. "Some of the tax amount has been paid off and the society applied for revision. The exact amount is being calculated, but it is around Rs4 crore," an official source said.

The BMC demolished illegal alterations in four ground-floor shops and at seven first-floor shops of the 32-storey Subhada building. Moreover, the civic body has all the intention to fully demolish two more illegally constructed shops on the structure's first floor, which belong to former minister Rajni Patil and her husband Ashok Patil.

Reliable sources confirmed to dna that shop numbers 3,4 and 5 in Sukhada society that were owned by Saroj Bhosale and politicians Dr Patangrao Kadam and Viswajit Kadam have not complied with the BMC notices sent to them. They have, instead, filed a writ petition in the Bombay high court and submitted an application to the state urban development department.

Only after a decision is arrived at will the demolition be carried out at Sukhada building. Many other politicians have also applied to the BMC's building proposal department for regularisation of the internal alterations and amalgamations.

Some of the politicians whose shops were demolished on Tuesday included Pratap Singh Mohite Patil, Salil Deshmukh, Ranjit Deshmukh, Mridula Chakravarthy, Shivraj Patil Chakurkar, Avinash Patil, Shantilal Jain and Ravindra Sakpal among others.
