Worli BDD chawl tenants to soon get a peek into their new homes

Beneficiaries of the Worli BDD chawl redevelopment will soon be able to see a sample of their dream homes soon. Authorities have released the work order for the project which will allow the contractor to build a sample flat.

Residents of decrepit houses until recently, the sample flat will give the tenants of the Bombay Development Directorate (BDD) chawl a view of the bigger and better blocks that they will be getting once the project is completed.

According to a senior officer from MHADA's Mumbai board, Worli is the biggest of all the three BDD chawls in the city. SS Konnur, executive engineer for BDD Chawl redevelopment, said, "In next 15-days work order will be awarded to the contractor. The work order means the contractor will be allowed to construct the sample flat, transit camp, rehab building and other sale buildings."

According to MHADA officials, over 20,000 people have visited the sample flats at N M Joshi Marg, and Naigaon. "Currently, the houses the tenants stay in are barely one-room kitchen units. Once redeveloped, they will get 2-BHK flats with an area of 500 sq ft," said the official.

BBD chawl redevelopment took the first step in early 2004, but was stuck for a long time owing to lack of political will till it saw some movement in 2014. The tenements were constructed nearly a century ago.
