After much delay, the Home department has finally given administrative approval to setting up of cyber crime labs across the state. The approval granted on Monday will pave the way for beginning of tendering work for setting up the labs.

In August 2015, finance minister Sudhir Mungantiwar had announced that the state government would start cyber labs in all the 36 districts before February 28, 2016, to prevent cyber crimes. Mungantiwar had said that every lab would require Rs21 lakh to get equipped with state-of-the-art technology and gadgets.

Department sources now claim that the tenders to buy the required software and hardware for the labs will be issued shortly. "Departments concerned, including industry, power and procurement, have been informed about the requirement; the process of issuing tendering will begin soon," said a senior Home department official.

Mungantiwar had held series of meetings with senior Home department officials, which included additional chief secretary (Home) KP Bakshi and then director general of police Sanjeev Dayal, to discuss growing cyber crimes in the state and the need for cyber labs in all districts to curb the same. Mungantiwar had also mentioned the need for cyber labs in his budget speech last year.

"The labs would be established in all 36 districts. While floating the tender for the cyber labs, maintenance for the next five years would also be included in the contract. To set up a cyber lab in Mumbai as early as possible, we are in touch with the Centre for assistance," the official added.

According to a senior state Home department official, the cyber force will undergo training in partnership with industry experts and agencies, including National Association of Software and Services Companies, and the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing.

In Mumbai, over 400 cyber crime cases were registered last year. Topping the chart are cases of credit card fraud and cloning, followed by those of obscene emails and SMSes.
