Union Shipping and Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari on Thursday said that he won't give an inch of land in South Mumbai to the Navy for staff quarters. "Many officers come to me for staff quarters in South Mumbai," he said. "Why can't they stay on borders? Only important officials can stay here in South Mumbai," he said.

He also slammed the Navy for objecting to the construction of a jetty for a floatel (floating hotel) at Nariman Point. "What business does Navy has in South Mumbai? It should primarily be at the borders, fighting terrorism," the minister said.

Gadkari was speaking on the sidelines of foundation stone laying ceremony for the International Cruise Terminal at Mumbai Port at Ballard Estate along with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. "I request everyone to bring proposals to me," he said on Thursday, "Prime Minister Narendra Modi has set up a committee under my chairmanship for infrastructure clearance and I will clear the projects required for India to become a developed nation."

Recently, the Bombay High Court had denied permission to Rashmi Developers Private Limited (RDPL) for constructing jetty at Nariman Point for a floatel, saying that the Navy had raised objections and asked to conduct a security audit before giving permissions for the same.

The International Cruise Terminal is basically capacity augmentation of the existing cruise terminal wherein it will have facilities like that of an airport terminal with an area of 1.7 lakh square feet and capacity of handling 7 lakh passengers. The terminal is expected to be completed by June 30, 2019.

Gadkari and Fadnavis also laid the stone for the Versova Creek bridge on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Highway later in the day.
