Women’s Day, Thane has much to celebrate. Of the 131 winners in the TMC polls, over 72 candidates are women and the majority is led by Shiv Sena. There are also chances that Thane will have a woman mayor this time.

The TMC (Thane municipal corporation) elections this year were not only a battle for strength between the Shiv Sena and BJP but even a battle of taxes.  For years, women have fought male domination and this time they came out top to rule the city of lakes.

As per the TMC election results for 2017, women have sought a majority in Thane civic polls.  Out of the total 359 women candidates nominated this time, over 72 have won the elections.

The largest women brigade as usual belongs to Sena with over 43 candidates, followed by NCP (nationalist congress party) with 17 and BJP with nine women winners respectively. While Shiv Sena (SS) fielded 119 candidates, 67 of them were women and 53 are men. And of the 120 candidates of BJP (Bhartiya Janata Party), 63 were women and 57 are men.

Vimal Bhoir, who won from ward number 7A for the second time as a Sena candidate says that it is high time the men vacate the Mayor’s chair for women. “Why should a man be mayor every time?” she asks.  “In fact I have learnt that on March 6 a woman is going to take over the mayoral seat in Thane this time,” she adds.
