Women corporators of Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) have an upperhand in understanding the issues related to the corporation. They are all set to help their corporation accordingly.

A fresh batch of 16 corporators from KDMC recently cleared a certified course titled 'Leadership of women representatives of local self government' and it aims to empower them. The general public of Kalyan-Dombivli can now get their issues addressed by these women corporators. 16 out of the 37 corporators of KDMC passed from SNDT Women's University's one year certified course that helps them understand their duties and rights better.

"This was the first course designed to educate and empower women elected to local self government bodies like municipal corporation and gram panchayats. Vice-chancellor, Vasudha Kamat of SNDT university helped us a lot to understand the course better," said Varada Joshi, founder of Varada Mahila Bahu-Uddeshya Sanstha, which is affiliated to SNDT university.

The distance education programme taught at Dombivli's Sant Tulsidas School has four subjects and four papers. Designed to groom and teach women leaders, it educates them about the functioning of the corporation or panchayat, how to speak in the house, duties and responsibilities. It includes extensive lectures, workshops and projects for the students.

"Though women have 33% reservation, they are not able to exercise this power adequately due to lack of required knowledge. This course helps them to get a grip on what is expected of them as public representatives," said Joshi. The course fees is Rs2,500 for a year and, according to Joshi, is better than going on expensive study tours to Kerala.

Darshana Shashikant Mhatre, corporator from ward number 49, Shivajinagar, Kalyan expressed that the course has helped her a lot. "I learnt a lot of things like what to do when you are standing for election from women's ward? How to speak to women in that area? How to get the work done?" said Mhatre.

"If we would have learnt this before elections, it would have really helped us a lot. However, we will be able to make good use of the knowledge during next elections," she added. Encouraged by this, another batch of 20 corporators have now enrolled for this course at the Kalyan center of Varada's institute.
