The Tilak Nagar police on Saturday arrested a 35-year-old woman for allegedly trying to kidnap a four-month-old baby from a civic run hospital in Ghatkopar (W). The kidnapped child was reunited with his mother by the police.

According to police, the incident occurred on early Saturday morning at Rajawadi hospital in Ghatkopar (W). A woman identified as Shakuntala Kanaujia (30), a resident of Ramabai Ambedkar Nagar in Ghatkopar, had taken her four-month-old son to the Rajawadi hospital for routine check up. As Kanaujia was waiting in the queue for her turn, her son wanted to visit the toilet and hence she stepped out of the line. When Kanaujia was changing her son's clothes, the accused woman identified as Khalikunissa Khan (35) approached Kanaujia and offered to help.

"When Khan started to help Kanaujia they got into a conversation and in no time Khan had taken the child in her arms. When Kanaujia turned to check the queue outside the doctor's cabin, Khan finding it as right opportunity slipped out of the hospital with the child and hailed an autorickshaw," said senior police inspector Bhagwat Sonawane.

As soon as Kanaujia realised that Khan was missing along with her son, Kanaujia started searching for both of them and rushed outside the hospital. "Just in time Kanaujia spotted Khan getting into an autorickshaw with the child. She chased the autorickshaw on her foot and started shouting for help," said an officer.

Kanaujia managed to catch up with the autorickshaw as it was moving on slow pace due to traffic. Luckily, for Kanaujia, a patrolling vehicle of Tilak Nagar was passing by and policemen spotted Kanaujia chasing an autorickshaw and hence stopped to make inquires. The police took both the women and the child to the police station and after investigation arrested Khan. Khan was charged with kidnapping under the Indian Penal Code.

"Khan has told us that she took the boy as she don't have a child of her own. However, we suspect that could be false as the ease with which she could carry out the crime indicates that she would have done it earlier as well, further investigation is on," said Sonawane.
