Fareeda, a 35-years-old woman hailing from Ambernath, has finally made it back to India on May 2 after 3 harrowing months in Muscat where she was living in terrible conditions. On January 27, Fareeda went to Dubai via an agent, and five days later she was sent to Muscat to work as a maid. "One day I received a call from her informing me of the ill-treatment she received in Muscat. She begged me to bring her back. I went to the agent, Imran, who asked me to pay Rs 60,000 for her return, which I did by February 20," said Abdul Khan, husband of the victim. After taking the money, Shaikh started dodging him, giving him false promises, alleges Khan. He also said that the agent was also caught in the alleged SSC paper leak.

"After I spoke to my wife in March, she went incommunicado. Shaikh was arrested in the SSC paper leak case. Not knowing what to do, I wrote a letter to the Ministry of External Affairs, approached the Women Commission and even called up Indian embassy in Muscat seeking their help," said Khan. Recounting the horror she had to face in Muscat, Fareeda said, "I don't know how I survived in Muscat without proper food or accommodation."

On receiving the letter, Maharashtra State Commission for Women immediately sought help of MEA. "Sushma Swaraj got the embassy to look into the matter. I also wrote to Mumbai police, requesting them to track these traffickers and act on them," said Vijaya Rahatkar, chairperson of the commission.

Daya Nayak, the police officer who had arrested Shaikh and others in the paper leak case when contacted confirmed the arrest of Shaikh, but said he only looked at the case in connection with paper leak and nothing else.

When DNA contacted Shaikh for his version, he said, "We have got the woman back and her money has been returned."
