The Colaba police have arrested a 40-year-old woman for allegedly stealing branded shirts from a posh showroom in Colaba on Saturday. Suspecting foul play, the store manager followed the woman out of the store, only to catch her taking some shirts out from under her burqa and handing them over to her accomplices.

The arrested woman has been identified as Bilkis Bano Abdul Gaffar Shaikh, a resident of Ahmedabad, Gujarat.

According to the police, around 7.30pm on Saturday, Shaikh entered the store with two of her male accomplices and asked the attendant to show her a few shirts.

Fifteen minutes later, the trio left without buying anything. The manager of the store, Azim Shaikh, who had found their behaviour suspicious throughout, followed them.

“The manager said he saw the woman take two shirts out from under her burqa and give it to their fourth accomplice. When he raised an alarm, the quartet tried fleeing the spot. But the manager caught hold of the woman, later identified as Bilkis Shaikh, while her three male accomplices managed to escape,” said an officer from the Colaba police station.

Shaikh has been booked and arrested under sections 380 (theft) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code. “She is not cooperating in the investigation and not providing any information about her gang members and her family. We have asked the Ahmedabad police to help us track her family down,” said the officer.
