A Thane-based woman lost Rs 1 lakh in a SIM swap fraud case recently. A cyber fraudster called the victim posing as a telecom company executive and hacked the victim's SIM card by asking her to send a pin to customer care number of their telecom company to link phone number with Aadhaar.

The victim, Vaibhavi Attal has approached Kasarvadavali police station in Thane.

According to the complainant, she had received a call from a person who identified herself as an executive of a telecom company and told her that her phone number has not been linked with Aadhaar. The executive further told the victim that if the sim is not linked with Aadhaar, her number would be disconnected, and to avoid the disconnection she will have to send an 18-digit PIN to the customer care number.

Since the executive did not ask for bank or Aadhar card details, she sent the 18 digit PIN to the customer care number without giving a second thought.

"After I texted the PIN, my sim card got disconnected. I was clueless. I then filed a complaint with the telecom company to activate my sim card. However, I got a shock of my life when I checked my bank balance; Rs 99 money was syphoned off from my bank account," Attal told DNA.

According to the police, the victim's phone number was linked to her bank account and the fraudster used her mobile number to get access to the bank account. The 18 digit PIN was actually a new SIM PIN the fraudster has bought; when shared with customer care, it allows for SIM swap. After which the customer's SIM gets deactivated, and the fraudster gets control of her phone number. The fraudster uses the phone number to make transactions from her bank account, using the OTPs sent for verification.

"We have received the complaint and we are looking into the matter," said a police officer of Kasarvadavali police station.
