A Mumbai-based woman lost money in an online fraud wherein her card details were compromised through a dubious job portal website where she had registered to get a job.

According to the complaint filed by the victim, Nilofar Manoori, with Malvani police, she was looking for a job and had registered herself on several online job portals. The woman received a call from a number, wherein the caller introduced himself as an executive for the job portal, Naukriway.com.

"The caller offered me a job if I registered on their website with a nominal fee of Rs 1,000, which was supposed to be refundable. Considering the caller to be genuine, I agreed. The caller then sent me a link to the job portal, where I registered myself with personal details and then paid a fee of Rs 1,000.

"As soon as the transaction became successful, I started receiving text messages of eight transactions and lost Rs 21,000," said Manoori.

"I later realised that the website was fake and they used my credentials to transfer the money. I received the One Time Password (OTP) only once and there were around eight different transactions. I immediately approached my bank and got the card blocked and also registered a complaint with the Malvani police. However, nothing has been done so far," the woman added.

"This is another modus operandi of cyber fraudsters wherein, if the credentials and card details are put on a particular website, they get copied by cybercriminals and are used to carry other transactions. One should never put their credentials on unauthorised gateways such as website or e-wallets as there are chances that the details may be copied and stored on that particular website," said cyber expert Shubham Singh.

In another incident in Thane, an executive became a victim of a similar cyber fraud and lost Rs 6,000.
