The Pant Nagar police have arrested a 45-year-old woman for allegedly duping six persons to the tune of Rs17 lakh by promising them MHADA flat at cheap rates. The accused had also contested the 2014 Lok Sabha elections as an independent candidate from the Northeast constituency.

According to the Pant Nagar police, the accused has been identified as Sunita Mohan Tupsaundarya, a resident of Ambedkar Chawl at Sardar Nagar in Ghatkopar (E). The complainant in the case, Sachin Yeshwant Bhalerao informed the police that he met Tupsaundarya and one other person named Sunil Sathe, through a common friend in 2008.

During one such meeting, Tupsaundarya claimed that she knew high ranking officials in MHADA and could get Bhalerao a flat at subsidy rates.

An officer from Pant Nagar police station narrated the chain of events that date back to 2008.

"Bhalerao gave Tupsaundarya Rs30,000 between June 2008 and January 2009, in order to purchase a MHADA flat at a low cost. In the meantime, word had spread around about Tupsaundarya's scheme and 'connections', so, five of Sathe's acquaintances got in touch with the accused. Even they were promised flats and the accused took a total of Rs16.40 lakh from them."

However, after the first few months when things did not move forward, all 6 started demanding Tupsaundarya to return their hard earned money. "Each time, when the complainants went to demand their money, the accused would give reasons ranging from administrative to clerical hurdles," said another officer.

After a few months, Tupsaundarya informed the complainants that their flats were sanctioned and would be allotted to them soon. "When the victims asked to see the said flats, they were handed over forged allotment papers. They realised that they have been conned and lodged a complaint with us," added the officer.

According to the police, in order to escape from the clutches of law, Tupsaundarya even issued some cheques to each of the victims with their respective amounts, but they bounced.

During the investigation, police learned that Tupsaundarya was earlier arrested by Khar police in connection with a cheating case. Police have booked Tupsaundarya for cheating and forgery.
