A 48-year-old man has been arrested by Goregaon police after his wife, who was allegedly being harassed for dowry, jumped off from a running train. She later succumbed to her injuries. The police are on the lookout for the arrested person's brother for his alleged involvement in the crime.

The husband has been identified as Ashraf Zaveri, a resident of Malwani in Malad (West).

According to the police, Zaveri married Munira over a decade ago and he had been allegedly subjecting her to mental and physical harassment. Munira had approached the police several times complaining against her husband, but the police continued to let off Zaveri with a warning.

"On March 23, Munira, who worked in a Jogeshwari school, received a call from Zaveri. Zaveri allegedly told her not to step into their house without bringing Rs2 lakh from her maternal home. She had informed about this threat to her mother Hameeda Bano and since then her phone had remained switched off," said an officer from Goregaon police station.

A couple of hours later, Hameeda received a phone call from Borivli railway police and she was informed that Munira had jumped off a running train between Kandivli and Malad railway stations. Munira, who had sustained severe injuries, was admitted to Shatabdi Hospital, police said.

"On March 28, Munira succumbed to her injuries. Hameeda then lodged a complaint against Zaveri and his brother Junaid. On the basis of Hameeda's complaint, Zaveri was arrested. He is in police custody and we are on the lookout for Junaid," said the officer.
