DB Marg police on Friday arrested a 39-year-old woman for allegedly duping a businessman of diamonds worth Rs 20.51lakh. Her husband too is allegedly involved in the plot and in order to mislead the police, she had filed a complaint with Gamdevi police claiming that her husband had gone missing. But analysis of her mobile phone records revealed she was in touch with him. Cops are now looking for the husband.

The woman, Nimisha Shah, is a resident of Nana Chowk in Grant Road, and complainant, Rajiv Beri, is a resident of Opera House.

According to the police, Nimisha and her husband, Rupeshkumar Shah, allegedly lured Beri into a deal involving diamonds assuring him huge profits. "They met Beri in Dubai a few months ago and had gained his trust. They induced him to part with diamonds worth Rs 20.51lakh, which they claimed they would sell in the market," said an officer in DB Marg police station.

As per the complaint, the couple did not return the money or the diamonds to Beri and allegedly also threatened to kill him. Beri then lodged a complaint against the couple at DB Marg station under sections 420 (cheating), 409 (criminal breach of trust), 120B (criminal conspiracy), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 34 (common intention) of Indian Penal Code.

"Investigations revealed the couple had entered into a conspiracy to dupe Beri assuring him huge profit in the diamond deal. It has also been learned that DB Marg police have another case registered against Rupeshkumar and he's wanted in that case too. Rupeshkumar and his wife are believed to be involved in cheating cases approximately worth Rs 1.50 crore," said the officer.

In the meantime, when DB Marg police tried to trace the culprits, they learned that Nimisha had lodged a missing person complaint with Gamdevi police stating that her husband had gone missing since the last six months. However, cops said, Nimisha hadn't assisted them to trace her husband.

"When we contacted Nimisha and made inquiries about her husband, she didn't give any satisfactory reply. In fact, Nimisha and Rupeshkumar's mobile phone call data records revealed they were in touch. Nimisha is in police custody till December 30," the officer added.
