A 37-year-old woman drowned in the swimming pool at a sport complex in Vile Parle (East) on Tuesday night. The Vile Parle police have booked the pool in-charge and trainer, identified as Sahdev Nivalkar and Vishal Tiwari, respectively, for causing death due to negligence.

Daughter-in-law of a constable, the deceased, Shreya Bhosale, stayed in the Bandra police quarters and worked in an advertising agency in Kalina, Santa Cruz (East).

According to civic officials, the Prabhodhankar Thackeray swimming pool belongs to Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) but the BMC has given it to a trust, Chhatrapati Shivaji Smarak, since nearly 20 years to look after it. If a property is given to a body on a caretaker basis, the entire safety and responsibility of the property lies with that body, say civic officials.

Police sources said a 15-day summer training camp was organised at the swimming pool. "Bhosale had joined the camp on May 2. On Tuesday around 8pm, Bhosale had come to the pool, as the training for women happens between 8.15pm and 9pm," said a source.

After the training session, when the cleaning of the pool was about to start, around 9.15pm, a staffer of the complex spotted a woman lying at the pool base and immediately informed the pool officials. Trainer and lifeguards then took Bhosale out of the pool. "She was given preliminary first aid. On getting no response, she was taken to Bhabha hospital, where doctors declared her dead," said a police officer.
Bhosale's body was then taken for post-mortem and the preliminary report revealed it was asphyxia.

"Bhosale went into the deep section without gear and drowned. The trainer must not have realised that someone was still there in the pool. Nivalkar and Tiwari have been booked since it is their responsibility to ensure people going in the pool are safe. They should send people in with proper gear. We have informed Bhosale's family about the accident," said deputy commissioner of police, zone VIII, Virendra Mishra.

He added that Nivalkar and Tiwari have been booked under section 304 A of the Indian Penal Code. No arrests have been made in the case so far.
