Woman, 21, tries to burn herself at Sion station

A mentally unstable woman, Samira Arif Sheikh, 21, attempted to commit suicide by burning herself with a matchbox at Sion railway station on Monday afternoon.

A mentally unstable woman, Samira Arif Sheikh, 21, attempted to commit suicide by burning herself with a matchbox at Sion railway station on Monday afternoon. However, GRP personnel rushed the injured woman to Sion Hospital where she is undergoing treatment.

Shahrukh Sheikh, the victim’s nephew said that Samira was a resident of Chirag Nagar in Ghatkopar (West) and was married to Arif Sheikh, an auto-rickshaw driver.

Senior police inspector Prakash Kirdat of Dadar Government Railway Police (GRP) station said, “There was commotion in second class ladies compartment in the CST-bound slow local at Sion station. Commuters told constables that she had tried to jump off the running train.

The police then asked her to alight with passengers and asked her to sit on a bench. She immediately  took out a matchbox and lit her kurta.  The police rushed to the railway canteen to bring water and doused the fire.

Kirdat said, “We have registered a case under section 309 (Attempt to commit suicide) IPC against Samira Sheikh on Wednesday.
