With the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) planning to throw open a swanky glass viewing gallery soon to give visitors an obstructed view of the BMC headquarters and Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) building, residents of Churchgate and Colaba have demanded more such viewing galleries near iconic structures like Rajabai Clock Tower on the Mumbai University premises.
"We will assess the feasibility and see if the project can be executed," said Kiran Dighavkar, Assistant Commissioner of A/Ward.
Dighavkar said the viewing gallery will soon be thrown open to the public as the tourist season is approaching. "The final touches are being added. Now, tourists who want to take selfies in front of the BMC headquarters and the CST building will be able to do so from the gallery. It also does not pose a threat to their lives," said a civic official. The viewing gallery, strategically constructed above the CST subway, has been designed keeping in mind the heritage status of both the Mumbai CST building, a UNESCO world heritage site constructed in 1888, which houses the headquarters of Central Railway and the Gothic-styled BMC headquarters which was opened in 1893.
