Even as Thane city is cited as a strong contender in the smart city race, the anti-corruption bureau (ACB) has punched holes in its dream with its latest statistics, which reveals that Thane tops the list of corruption.
According to its report, the city ranks first in Thane range as a number of officials have been caught red-handed for accepting bribe this year. Thane range includes Thane, Navi Mumbai, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg in its jurisdiction.
From January to November, ACB caught 56 officials red-handed in Thane, while 24 were caught in Raigad, 16 in Palghar and 14 in Navi Mumbai. Interestingly, only 10 officials were caught in Sindhudurg, of the total 131 traps laid in the entire region.
“The reason for increase in number of traps laid by the ACB is more because there has been a sharp rise in the number of victims coming forward to file complaints against those accepting bribes,” said an ACB official, adding, “In addition, we have been creating awareness and taking prompt action against the wrongdoers.”
At the state level, the revenue department leads with 278 cases against its officials, with 357 officials caught red-handed. The department is closely followed by the police department, with 247 cases registered and 329 cops being arrested.
Officials from the panchayat samitis in the state rank third, with 123 cases and 156 people being caught. The police department also leads with 12 cases in disproportionate assets category, while civic officials were second in the list, with seven cases. Six cases were registered against officials from the revenue department.
