In a shot in the arm for the opposition Congress and NCP, MNS chief Raj Thackeray will hold around nine public meetings across Maharashtra to call on people to vote against the BJP-Shiv Sena.

The MNS, which was said to be in talks with the NCP for an electoral understanding, will not contest the Lok Sabha elections. However, Raj, who had once supported then Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi as the Prime Ministerial candidate, has said he will work to unite voters against Modi and BJP president Amit Shah.

A senior MNS leader said Raj was likely to address nine rallies across Maharashtra. "However, this will be done by the party and he will not venture on to the Congress-NCP's platform," the leader said.

The MNS leader however did not reveal if Raj would openly campaign for the Congress and NCP or call on people to vote for the candidate best poised to defeat those from the ruling alliance.

The rallies may be held at Solapur, Nanded, Maval, North, North East and North West Mumbai and Nashik. Incidentally, the Congress- NCP has fielded heavyweights on these seats like former union home minister Sushilkumar Shinde, former chief minister Ashok Chavan, former deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar's son Parth, actress Urmila Matondkar, Sanjay Dina Patil, Priya Dutt and former deputy chief minister Chhagan Bhujbal's nephew Sameer Bhujbal, respectively.

Raj is likely to announce his campaign strategy in the MNS' Gudi Padwa rally on Sunday.
