Will take him to task if he fails to work: 91-year-old mother of new minister

"I won't hesitate in beating him up, if he doesn't work for the welfare of the people of the state," joked Gunatai Jagannath Jankar, the 91-year-old mother of newly inducted cabinet minister Mahadev Jankar, joked on the sidelines of his oath-taking.

The Rashtriya Samaj Party leader took oath on Friday as a cabinet minister, which was administered by governor C Vidyasagar Rao during a function held at Central hall of Vidhan Bhavan. Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis and most of the ministers were present for the ceremony.

While his mother could not speak much, Mahadev Jankar said he left home for 27 years for the betterment of society, adding that it was because of his mother's efforts that he became an engineer and, hence, he wanted to bring her for the ceremony.

Minister of state Ram Shinde was elevated to the post of a cabinet minister.

Oath-taking highlights

While Jaikumar Rawal started his oath by reaffirming his love for Khandeshi Ahirani language, Mahadev Jankar took the name of his mentor the late Gopinath Munde. Pandurang Fundkar also evoked Munde.

Sadabhau Khot made a special mention to farmers and said that he was taking an oath by remembering his fellowmen, who are serving the soil, the mother for all of them.

Jankar's supporters took out a procession around Vidhan Bhavan soon after the oath-taking ceremony.

Rawal had wore a safa on his head, which is the traditional Rajput ceremonial headgear.
