Despite the fact that the BJP came to power in Maharashtra by pointing fingers at the state's empty coffers, blaming it on the populist measures of the Congress and NCP, the government has been treading the same path since it asumed power.

The latest example of that would be the decision to waiver the farmers' loans, which could cost the state exchequer atleast a whopping Rs 30,000 crore. Prior to this decision, the government, headed by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, had announced many ambitious projects to fulfil the promises made during the election campaign. These projects and the multi-billion infrastructure projects are testimony to the fact that the BJP-led government has been doing nothing to validate the Democratic Front slamming that had engaged in.

However, Chandrakant Patil, a senior minister in Fadnavis' cabinet, who heads the PWD Department, refused to term these projects as populist measures. Claiming the initiatives to be an imperative, he said it was the state's 'duty' to take steps in this direction to fulfil their election promises.

When asked about the Indu Mill and Arabian Sea memorials, Patil said that these are a symbol of the aspirations of the people and both of them are the best in the world and one cannot/ shouldn't think of money then.

Commenting on the burden of the loan waiver on the state treasury, Sudhir Mungantiwar, Finance Minister, said, "You can't term it a burden, since it is the farmers who feed the entire country. It is the duty of the government to provide relief to farmers, especially when they have been hit by an agrarian crisis, which is as result of the doings of the previous government. We will raise money from any source possible; won't let the farmers down."

The CM has said that the state treasury has always been open for the farmers, and the government wouldn't hesitate to go an extra mile to bring the needy farmers back in the credit net.
