As the police investigate the murder of three-and-a-half-year-old Junera Khan, chilling details of the case have come to light. A probe revealed that one of the Junera’s abductors had called up her father, Mumtaz and had threatened to abduct his other daughter too, if his demands were not met.

The juveniles held in the case have also alleged that the police had beaten them up. Junera was abducted on December 5 from her Duncan Road residence and her body was found on the terrace of an adjacent building on Saturday. The police had arrested Junera’s neighbour and his college mate, both minors, in the said case.

The duo were produced before Dongri remand home and were remanded to judicial custody till January 2.

According to the police, on December 5, Junera was allegedly abducted from her building’s veranda by her 17-year-old neighbour, who stays in the room adjacent to Junera’s. He first used chloroform to make Junera unconscious, and when Junera’s family started making inquiries in the building after she disappeared, he got scared and strangulated the girl with a mobile phone charger on the same day.

The neighbour then packed the body in a bag and dumped it on the terrace of the adjacent building, which he could access from one of the windows of his house, police said.

“He then roped in his college mate in the plan to extort money from Junera’s father. The duo then made several calls to Junera’s father Mumtaz from different phone numbers and from different locations and demanded a ransom of Rs 1 crore. The ransom amount was then brought down to Rs 28 lakh later. The duo told the police that they wanted the money to buy a sports car,” said an officer from JJ Marg police station.

Mumtaaz said, “The abductor threatened me that if I did not give the money he would sell the daughter’s kidney and make money from it, and would also abduct my other daughter. He kept saying his boss has given him instructions and he will follow what his boss wants him to do. They killed my innocent daughter and we demand death penalty for the perpetrators.”

The juvenile’s uncle, who was Junera’s neighbour, said, “The boy would even shun killing goats as part of the ritual on Bakri Eid. We always got him whatever he wanted, whichever phone he wanted. His demands were always fulfilled. If he wanted a car, we would have gotten him one at the age of 18. We do not understand why he did this. We will not pay for his bail. He needs to repent for his sins.”

“We will inform the court that the juveniles should be tried as adults, and will also make inquiries with the college where the juveniles study to ascertain how they managed to get chloroform,” said Deputy Commissioner of police, Zone I, Manoj Kumar Sharma.

Junera’s mother Saheeda alleged, “The boy disliked my daughter for some reason. He would never let her play in the veranda. There had been instances in the past where he had shouted at her, snatched her doll and returned it in a dismantled condition after a month.”

Recalling the unfortunate day, she said, “When I knocked at the door of his house, he only half-opened it. He was perspiring profusely when we asked him if my daughter was there, he said she had come here to ask for a chocolate, but he asked her to go because he didn’t have any.”
