The traffic on Thane's Ghodbunder road is set to ease a bit as one service side of it, which was closed for widening work, will be opened soon.

The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has taken up road widening work across the city in an aggressive manner. For the Ghodbunder service was closed and the civic body will throw open the right side (from Thane to Ghodbunder) of the service road by next week.

"The municipal commissioner visited the spot and found the work satisfactory. He has given instructions to open the right side of the road for vehicular movement," said Sandip Malvi, deputy commissioner and public relations officer, TMC.

Civic chief Sanjeev Jaiswal also took action against car showrooms on the stretch which keep their vehicles parked there. He ordered civic officials to levy heavy fine on these showrooms which obstruct the road.

"With the service road opening up, it will be a smooth drive for motorists to pass by during peak hours as the main road become jam packed," said Mohit Jadhav, a resident from Brahmand.

Moreover, after taking stock of most of the road widening work across the city, Jaiswal has ordered the work to be completed before monsoon. He also visited the Kapurbawdi to Balkum stretch of the road and asked officials to remove the poles from there.

Thane station road, which was the first to undergo road widening in the city, was also inspected by him and he instructed officials to finish the pending work in the next four days.

The roads near Thane station area are widened to 50 feet from 30 feet. "Though the roads are bigger now, there are hawkers who line up there in the evenings making it difficult for us to walk on the pavements," said Anil Khaire, a resident of Thane. "Hope TMC does something to remove these hawkers. Otherwise, we will be forced to walk on the roads causing more traffic jams," he said.
