With the Maharashtra state assembly elections just a few days away, the Janata Dal (S) (JD(S)) will be addressing a press conference in Mumbai on Saturday to expose an alleged Rs 1 lakh crore scam and other instances of corruption by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Shiv Sena in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) over the last five years.

Speaking to dna, Mumbai President of the JD(S) Prabhakar Narkar said on Saturday, "We can easily see the scams done by the state government, but at the same time a scam of around Rs 1 lakh crore is taking place in the BMC, and we will be exposing it today in the press conference in Mumbai."

Narkar also alleged that even after breaking the alliance in the state assembly polls, the Shiv Sena and the BJP are still intact in the BMC only because they get huge amounts of money.

He added, "The BMC budget this year is around Rs 31,000 crore, last year it was Rs 26,000 crore. But yet no development has taken place in the city. Then where does the money of the people go? Even after having huge yearly budgets, why does the city need to take a loan to complete projects?"

"When Uddhav Thackeray is presenting the vision document for the state, why is Mumbai city still not developed? Why does the BMC need to spent money on the construction of the same roads again and again? Uddhav Thackeray should answer these questions," Narkar said.

Citing some of the scams that have taken place in the BMC, Narkar claims that the state government had purchased belts for police personnel at Rs 1,000 to 1,200, but the BMC purchased the same belts for security guards at Rs 10,000. He added, "After Mumbai terror attack, the responsibility of pipeline security had been given to a firm, but so far, instead of Rs 95 crore, Rs 175 crore has been spent."

Standing committee chairman Yashodhar Phanse said, "Many such allegations have taken place so far, but non of them could prove it. We will see what allegations Janata Dal makes and if there is any concrete truth, we will investigate the matter."
