Why do we celebrate Republic Day on January 26?

Sunday, 26 January 2014 - 10:12am IST | Place: Mumbai | Agency: DNA

On January 26, 1950, the Constitution of India, drafted by Dr BR Ambedkar, came into force and replaced the Government of India Act, 1935, as the governing document of the country, completing the transition towards becoming a sovereign democratic republic. The constitution was passed on November 26, 1949. However, because the Indian National Congress had passed a resolution in 1930, fixing January 26 as the independence day, the assembly, after passing the constitution, decided to wait till January 26, 1950, to bring it (the constitution) into force. This is what some youngsters told dna...

Disha Turkar, FYBCom, Kelkar College, Mulund: I only have a rough idea but I think our constitution was formed on this day.

Ketki Mehta, TYBMM, SIES College, Sion: We accepted the constitution on January 26.

Saanaee Naik, TYBA, St Xavier’s College: The constitution, adopted on November 26, 1949, came into force on January 26, 1950. India became a sovereign socialist, secular and democratic republic from this day, although socialist and secular was added to the Preamble in 1976 by the 42nd amendment act. Since 1930, Indians had been celebrating January 26 as independence day. So, after adopting the constitution, the constituent assembly decided to wait for this date to bring it into force.

Prabha Mani, SYPDGM, SIES College, Nerul: It was the day our country was declared a sovereign republic as we adopted the constitution written by Ambedkar.
