The interconnectivity of social media means it is now the perfect hunting ground for cybercrime.

In light of this growing trend, the Cyber Crime Police Station (CCPS) at Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) has been flooded with new cases of fraud, wherein the accounts of WhatAapp users are being hacked.

The conmen reach out to people on the victim's contact list and ask them to transfer funds to their Paytm account to meet exigencies.

In the past month, the police has received about 100 complaints with a similar trend. Police claims the victims are lured into the cyber scam through links circulated on WhatsApp. Unassuming users are then led to a fake website which infects their phones with malware, allowing the scammer to obtain sensitive information. "Most victims don't approach us because the scam isn't big enough for them to notice. They need to exercise caution," said an officer.
