In the next fifteen days, the Railways, traffic police and different civic bodies will identify entry/exit points at stations on the Western Railway (WR) that are not used frequently. These will also include the illegal entry/exit points that have been created by unscrupulous elements and slum dwellers staying along the tracks.

According to Railway officials, at a meeting held on Tuesday between the various agencies, it was decided to identify various points used by commuters to illegally enter or exit the rail premises. These locations, also the reason behind trespassing on the tracks, have lead to fatal accidents. A total of 17.5 km of boundary wall too will be erected along the WR stretch at the cost of Rs 4.5 crore.

“Our rail officers from Mumbai division along with other departments will survey these entry/exit points that are either used infrequently or have been illegally created,” said Ravinder Bhakar, Chief PRO, WR.

The aim is to minimise its use by unscrupulous elements such as drug addicts and hawkers. Moreover, it will also mean proper vigilance at selective sections where people use the rail premises. Once these points are identified, then the local municipal corporations will plug them by fencing or erecting a wall for a controlled crowd management.

Also, the work of demarcating station premises is almost complete. Here, the railways have either erected blue poles for signage that demarcate the boundary of railways. Sources said that these are steps carried out for transport and crowd management and will soon have barricades put up outside stations beyond which taxis and auto rickshaws won’t be allowed.

Also, CCTVs will be installed at the FOB landings to keep a tab on the crowd.
