The Western Railway, which is looking at shifting its emergency medical room (EMR) from Mumbai Central's dispensary because of its distance from the suburban platforms, has hit upon a novel idea. Keeping in mind the fact that there is hardly any space on the suburban platforms at Mumbai Central and the station itself being a very congested and heavily-patronised one, officials have decided to run the EMR from inside a porta cabin (a room fashioned out of huge metal containers often used in the shipping industry to transport cargo).

The EMR was mandated by a Bombay High Court order in November 2014 and both WR and Central Railway are to set up these rooms at bigger stations to ensure train accident victims get quick treatment on station premises before being taken to hospitals nearby for specialised treatment.

Speaking to dna, WR divisional railway manager Shailendra Kumar said, "The EMR will be run inside a porta cabin which will be placed on the western side of the station near the landing of an FOB. This place is close to the road and will help save time during treatment of a train accident victim."

The contract for the porta cabin mechanism should be done by February 18, said officials, and by the end of the month the new EMR should be up and running.

The situation arose after it was realised that the EMR at Mumbai Central was too far away from the station and too close to the sprawling BMC-run Nair hospital nearby. Emergency medical services had been set up inside a room of the WR dispensary near the divisional railway manager's office complex and it was found that taking a train accident victim to Nair hospital was quicker than bringing him/her to the EMR for primary treatment.

On Tuesday, the WR inaugurated three EMRs — at Mumbai Central, Bandra and Goregaon — with officials claiming that the Mumbai Central EMR would shift to its new porta cabin location by the end of the month. In all, WR will have 10 EMRs by February 26.
