In a bid to improve the punctuality of trains and manage the working hours of motormen, the Western Railway (WR) is extending its Crew Management System (CMS) at all stations. However, the endeavour has brought forth a clash of views between the motormen and the rail administration.

Sources have informed that the CMS will be installing finger print machines for signing in and out which will enable the administration to monitor the working of motormen, to keep a tab on the trains' schedule and the rest hours given to the workmen. It will also ensure that the motormen start their duty from the scheduled railway station rather than coming all the way to Churchgate or Borivali stations where the CMS has already been installed. There are around 425 motormen working with the Western Railways with a vacancy of 90 staff.

"The CMS will ensure that the motormen sign in and sign out properly based on which their next day's schedule will be automatically decided. We will have more control on train running, thus punctuality will also improve," said a WR official.

Presently, if a motorman has to start a train from Virar, they first go to Churchgate to login and then travel as a passenger till Virar before beginning their duty. This results in wastage of time which in turn delays the trains. The WR authorities are planning to install it at Virar and Dadar for which trials are on at Churchgate and Borivali stations."Every time the motorman travels as passenger to sign in into the roster, he claims it as overtime," said another WR official. A motorman works for 6-7 hours a day and has to rest for minimum 6 hours before taking the next trip.

"The CMS will complicate our working. It wouldn't be efficient in the suburban railway system," said a motorman.
