Western Railway to deploy 232 MSSC staff for women's safety

In the backdrop of the Elphinstone stampede killing 23 commuters and injuring to nearly 40, the Western Railways (WR) on Thursday said that it will deploy 232 Maharashtra State Security Corporation (MSSC) personnel and 97 female home guards for strengthening security and managing crowds of suburban commuters especially women commuters.

This will be in addition to the existing manpower of the Railway Protection Force (RPF). A K Gupta, General Manager, Western Railway (WR), said, "Security in trains and on platforms has always been the requirement. We hope that deployment of the additional security staff will help the RPF to monitor security more efficiently."

Gupta added, "Prior to this, we installed CCTV cameras. We also have a dedicated application and a 24-hour helpline for the safety of commuters, especially women commuters. With the additional security arrangements, we are going to increase our security by nearly 33 per cent.

The additional security force was given a two-day induction by the RPF before their deployment. The additional security force will also control and monitor crowds during morning and evening peak hours, apart from guarding isolated spots on the western line.

The WR said that it has identified around 37 vulnerable stations. The stations where additional security force will be deployed include Churchgate, Grant Road, Charni Road, Mumbai Central, Elphinstone Road, Dadar, Mahim, Bandra, Khar Road, Santacruz, Jogeshwari, Andheri, Goregaon, Malad, Borivali, Bhayandar, Nalasopara and Virar.

  • The WR has identified 37 vulnerable stations. Some of them incude Churchgate, Grant Road, Charni Road, Mumbai Central, Elphinstone Road, Dadar, Mahim, Bandra, Khar Road.
