The Anti Extortion Cell of city crime branch on Friday arrested a 24-year-old welder who, along with his associate, collected information about a well-known doctor from Wadala and started demanding extortion money of Rs3 crore. While the main accused, Kalimullah Khan, a resident of Shanti Nagar in Antop Hill, has been nabbed, the police are looking for his associate who has gone underground. The police are also examining whether prime accused Khan's girlfriend, who passed off inside information about his employer, can be booked in the case. Khan has previously worked in the UAE as a welder.

How were the complainants threatened to shell out money?

According to the police, the complainant runs a nursing home, while her husband works as an officer at the Austrian consulate. "The couple was receiving threat calls on their mobile and residence numbers from some unknown Uttar Pradesh number. The callers had been demanding Rs3 crore as extortion and threatening to kill their daughter, who is studying medical outside the city, in case they failed to comply," said senior police inspector Vinayak Vast.

When did the victim start getting threat calls?

"The couple started receiving calls from September 26, 2014. Both of them were under tremendous pressure as the extortionists had given the details of their daughter, who is staying outside Mumbai doing a course in medicine, and son, who is abroad. The extortionists had threatened to harm the siblings," said assistant inspector Sanjeev Dhumal.

How did the cops nab the prime accused?

The police kept a watch on their nursing home and residence. The topography of the nursing home was studied. The activities of the staff of the nursing home were put under surveillance and before the accused could act on the extortion plan or harm the victims, the police arrested Khan from Dadar, where he was waiting to meet his girlfriend. His personal search yielded details of the complainant, mobile phones, SIM cards from UP and other incriminating articles. On sustained questioning, Khan confessed to have committed the crime.

From whom did the culprit get info about the doctor?

During interrogation, it transpired that the accused used to work as a welder in a fabrication shop in the vicinity. He and the absconding accused had befriended a nurse of the nursing home and hatched the conspiracy to extort money from the doctor and her husband.
