The anti extortion cell (AEC) of the Mumbai crime branch has recovered 13 cell phones along with five weapons and 17 live cartridges from two recently arrested associates of fugitive gangster Ravi Pujari.

The phones are been analysed by the Mumbai crime branch as they believe the accused used the same to communicate with Pujari.

The AEC on April 6 arrested Dayanand Jatan and Bipin Patil who were believed to have been working as informers for Pujari in Thane district. According to AEC officials, Patil, a businessman with several wine shops in Thane and Mumbai, would collect information of prospective targets along with their phone number, addresses, photos and movement. He would pass this information on to Jatan, a trusted aide of Pujari for the past 10 years, who would later pass on the same to the gangster.

Based on this information, Pujari would make extortion calls to the victims. Jatan and Patil were arrested by the crime branch for allegedly plotting the murder of a Dombivli based politician, and for planning attacks on prominent businessmen and politicians in Thane district.

Joint commissioner of police (crime) Atulchandra Kulkarni confirmed the development, saying: "We have recovered a total of 13 cell phones, five foreign made weapons, one of which belongs to Jaywant Mhatre who was murdered in 2005, and 17 rounds of ammunition from the accused."

"We know for sure that the accused were in direct touch with Pujari. The recovery of Mhatre's weapon from the arrested men clearly shows that the gang has been active from the past 10 years," added Kulkarni.
