Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis on Thursday announced the formation of a mahamandal for protection of cow and its progeny. He was talking at an event organised by Shri Santacruz Jain Tapagachh Sangh along with the support of other Jain groups. The function was held at the Swami Narayan Yogi Sabhagruha in Dadar.
"We will soon be forming a mahamandal to ensure that cow and its progeny can be protected. We hope all of you will come forward in a big way," said the chief minister. Saying that the extension on ban on bulls and bullocks was not due to religious reasons, Fadnavis added that Article 48 of the Constitution allowed all steps to be taken to protect interest of farmers.
"The step has been taken in the interest of farmers," said Fadnavis.
The CM added that the Bombay high court not granting a stay on the issue was partially a win for the government. "In a way, the court has upheld what we have done. As the matter is sub judice, I can't say anything more on it."
He called upon Jains to actively participate in it. Terming the "beef ban" tag as "insensitive", Fadnavis said, "People are calling it #beef ban. Can a living organism be looked at only as a meat ball?"
He emphasised that cow dung was ensuring better output in agriculture. "People in Europe told me that nowhere do they find organic soya bean in so much quantity as they do in India," said Fadnavis, crediting the high yield of soya to cow dung manure.
The meeting was attended by state cabinet minister Prakash Mehta, BJP city president Ashish Shelar, and Jain monks. "Through the decision, Fadnavis has said animals' right to live should not be interfered with."
