Infrastructural development like the replacement of water mains and bunch lines by the hydraulic engineering department of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has resulted in better quality of drinking water supply to Mumbaikars. If the last four months are considered, excluding areas like Dahisar, Borivali and other chronic areas like Malwani and Mankhurd, households in the city have received better quality of water.

In January and February, it was only water samples collected from Borivali and Dahisar that were detected unfit for drinking. The E coli bacteria detected in February in Borivali and Dahisar were 1.82 per cent and 2.33 per cent respectively of the water samples collected. While in January, in addition to Borivali with 1.67 percent, water samples from Dadar, Shivaji Park were detected with E coli at 1.47 per cent.

In the last two months, other areas where some samples of drinking water were detected unfit were Masjid, Dongri, Mankhurd, Govandi, Kurla, Sakinaka, Grant Road, Malabar Hill, Bandra and Santacruz west. All other civic wards in the city received 100 per cent pure quality water.

Hydraulic Engineer of BMC, Ashok Tawadia said, "It was ten years ago when water samples were detected with upto 18 per cent of E coli. However, last year too there was improvement. This year our target is to restrict percentage of E coli below 2."

"Works like changing the water mains, replacement of bunch lines in slum areas has helped in minimizing contamination. However, the detection of leakages becomes difficult and contamination of water rises during monsoon in water logging-prone areas and slums," Tawadia added.
