It is World Water Day on March 22. While water scarcity has made everyone restless in Thane, the water pipeline of STEM near Kharegaon toll naka is leaking for the past two weeks. Although the state has succeeded in imposing restrictions on water usage during Holi, a lot needs to be done to plug the leak that is happening here.
"While there is a four-day weekly water cut imposed by Thane Municipal Corporation and STEM in Kalwa-Mumbra (from Wednesday to Saturday), water keeps leaking from this pipeline," said Sushant Suryarao, a resident of Kalwa.
The STEM pipeline provides water to Thane, Kalyan and Mira-Bhayander. The leakage spot is a favourite spot for truck drivers and others in the area to come for a bath and clean their vehicles.
The residents, who complain of stepmotherly treatment by the TMC in terms of water cuts, are aghast with this water wastage happening for the past two weeks. "Here we are going without water for days every week and there it is wasted so much," said Anil Pednekar, a resident of Kalwa.
Many residents say they brought this to the notice of the authorities but it has borne no fruit. "We have informed TMC; we have informed STEM, but nobody comes ahead to plug this leak. This is very frustrating," said Suryarao.
When contacted, deputy engineer of TMC's water department Ravindra Khadtale said that they have conveyed the matter to STEM. "We have also sent two people to the spot immediately after we got the information," he said.
Sanket Gharat, Deputy engineer, STEM, said that the leakage has been plugged as of now. "Due to summer, metal pipes expand leading to joint leakage. But we have repaired it now," he said.
