The Humboldt penguin enclosure in Ranibag zoo in Byculla, which opened last week for the public, has developed cracks, alleged a member of the Watchdog Foundation team. He alleged that the swimming pool rocks of the enclosure developed cracks at two places that were around 3-4 mm wide.

Godfre Pimenta, a member of the Watchdog Foundation, said that two members of the foundation noticed cracks during their visit to the zoo on Monday.  “As a curiosity like every other Mumbaikars, two members Watchdog Foundation Team visited the penguin enclosure of Byculla Zoo on Monfday to see the seven Humboldt Penguins. But they were shocked to notice that the swimming pool rocks at two places have developed cracks. And one of them is one foot in length and 3-4 mm wide,” said Pimenta.

He added that this was a socking for them since the facility had been developed with huge money and it had developed cracks within two days of its opening. The Humboldt penguin enclosure was thrown open for public on Saturday.

Pimenta alleged that BMC administration opened the enclosure hurriedly without checking whether the said enclosure met the required standards. “Did the civic body obtain the fitness certificate that the said facility meets the required standards?” asked Pimenta.

Dr Sanjay Tripathy, director of Byculla Zoo, refuted allegations of the Watchdog Foundation. He said, “There is no need to worry as the cracks are natural,” adding that glass reinforced concrete material had been used over the rock and it looked like that.

However, visitors continue to flock to see Humboldt penguin. Tripathy said that even on Monday over 8,000 people visited the zoo.
