Residents of Borivali, Cuffe Parade, Fort and Mulund are lagging behind in waste segregation at source, with less than 60 per cent of the households in these areas segregating waste. On the other end of the spectrum lie Dadar and Parel, where 100 per cent of households segregate waste.

The data was released by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), which has been pushing for segregation of wet and dry waste. As per data available with the solid waste management of the BMC, of the total 21,423 households in Cuffe Parade, Fort and Colaba part of A-Ward, only 11,820 households were segregating their waste. "The pace of waste segregation in A-Ward is slow, even as waste generation has increased from 261 MT to 265 MT," said an official.

However, the situation is even worse in Mulund, the worst performing ward under the BMC. Of the 24,856 households in Mulund (T-Ward), only 11,289 were segregating their waste last month. "In the last one month, about 1,098 households started segregating waste," said a senior official from the BMC's solid waste management wing, adding that waste generation increased from 171 MT to 182 MT in the last two months.

Dadar and Parel, meanwhile, saw maximum awareness about waste segregation. "All 43,111 households in Dadar and Parel are segregating waste, which is encouraging for other wards which are lagging behind," said the official.

Apart from these two, residents of Agripada, Madanpura and Tarwadi are also helping the civic body out. Of the 17,792 households in these localities, 17,687 are segregating their waste.

Another BMC official said segregating waste would help the civic body manage its garbage disposal in a more scientific manner. "Since the Mulund dumping ground was closed, we have to ensure less trash reaches the two remaining dumping grounds," the official said.
