The latest information that the Mumbai police have stumbled upon reportedly reveals that the part money from the sale of INX Media, owned by Peter and Indrani Mukerjea, was parked in Sheena Bora's account.

Mumbai police is now probing whether this Rs150 crore – the channels were sold for a whopping Rs 500 crore in 2008-09 – led to Sheena's murder in April 2012.

On Monday, Indrani's former partner and Sheena's biological father Siddhartha Das had told the media in Kolkata that Indrani could have killed Sheena for money. According to police sources, money appears to be the strongest reason behind the murder.

As per the earlier reports, in 2007 after finishing his stint with Star India as Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Peter, along with his wife Indrani, started INX Media. It was launched with private equity players buying 50% stakes, which included Temasek (20%), New Silk Route Advisors (20%), Kotak Mahindra BankBSE 5.71 % and New Vernon Private Equity (10.01%). The Mukerjeas controlled 50% of the shares and managed to raise around Rs750 crore.

However by 2008, the company with the escalated cost, faced cash crush and so in 2009 both Peter and Indrani sold their shares to private equity players. It was believed that the couple got around Rs450 to Rs500 crore through the deal.

Since a lot of money had been generated from the sale of INX Media, the Information and Broadcasting ministry had then ordered a probe. However, the report has still not been made public.

"The sale of channels had reportedly fetched the Mukerjeas roughly around Rs450 to Rs500 crore, of which Indrani had allegedly parked Rs150 crore with Sheena for safekeeping. Sheena was aware of the money in her account and so she later refused to part with the money. We are probing if this was the reason which led to her murder," said an investigating officer.

Three Raigad cops reportedly questioned

Following Sheena Bora's murder, serious questions have been raised on the role of Raigad police on the manner in which they handled the case when Sheena's corpse was found by Pen police in 2012

A high-ranking home department official said the government was of the view that prima facie the Raigad police failed to do their job properly. "We have questioned three policemen from Raigad. The probe will establish whether there was negligence or intentional cover-up. The probe report will fix the lapses and action would be taken accordingly," said a government official.
