The alleged killer of a newly married woman was arrested from Mulund Nahur area on Saturday. The accused, identified as Dipesh Dodhade (24), had stabbed to death 24-year-old Priyanka Kharade in Thane's Wagle Estate on May 6 and fled from the spot.

According to the Wagle Estate police, before committing the crime, Dodhade had taken Rs1,500 from his mother and after fleeing from the murder spot, he went to several places, including Kalyan, Dombivli and Pune, to evade arrest.

After booking Dodhade under section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code, the police produced him in a court which sent him to police custody till May 18.

Dodhade, a resident of Lokmanya Nagar, has told the police that the deceased and he were in a relationship for two years and that they were about to get married. However, she got married to another man without even informing him. Dodhade claimed to have met the girl, who was working in a private company, through a common friend. After the first meeting, they fell in love and started seeing each other outside the area, said a source.

The deceased, who was married off to a Kalyan man, had come to her mother's Thane home on May 5 to take her MA exams. By then, Dodhade had come to know about her marriage and had already planned to kill her. That is why when he came to meet Kharadeand on May 6, he was already carrying a knife. According to a police officer, the girl used to help Dodhade financially. However, when the cops had a word with both the families, they said they were not aware of all these things.

"We have arrested the accused and recorded his statement. The accused has said that they were in a relationship. Since the girl is dead, we will take the statement of the common friend who had introduced the victim to the accused. It was with the help of CCTV footage the accused was identified and traced. The accused had attacked the victim with a knife at least seven times. Further probe is on," said Wagle Estate police inspector Madan Patil.

The murder had taken place on a busy road near the passport office where many witnessed the crime but none came forward to stop the attacker.
