Virgin Group to construct 10 km demonstration track for hyperloop

The Virgin Group will construct a 10 km long demonstration track between Hinjewadi IT park and Old Pune-Mumbai highway for the hyperloop transportation system. A team of state government officers will soon visit a similar demonstration track that the group has developed in Los Angeles.

An officer from the Chief Minister's office told DNA,'' The land for the proposed demonstration track is in the government's possession. Virgin Group has already prepared a detailed project report for the development of the hyperloop transportation system between Mumbai and Pune which is expected to cover the distance in a record time of 20-25 minutes from the present three hours. The company will soon reveal the project development plan."

He informed that the Virgin Group has not yet disclosed the investment that will go in the proposed hyperloop transportation system between Mumbai and Pune.

''However, the capital cost for one kilometre is expected to be in the range of Rs 400 crore to Rs 700 crore which is currently required for the elevated and underground metro railway,'' the officer said.

The officer refused to divulge details about the land requirement for Mumbai-Pune hyperloop transportation system, citing that the issue is quite sensitive.

Richard Branson, Chairman of the Virgin Group, had announced that a framework agreement has been signed with the state govenment on Sunday. He added that the hyperloop transportation system will annually carry 150 million passenger and operate at the speed of 1,000 km per hour (kmph).

However, the official informed that the hyperloop transportation system will operate at 350 km per hour initially. Later it will be operated at 600 kmph before finally reaching the limit of 1000 kmph.
