Although the city’s prominent VIPs seek security cover, they evade paying the police for the services.

However, none of their security cover has been withdrawn because of non-payment. The police give security to those who want it.

Replying to an RTI filed by Chetan Kothari, the police revealed that the number of people who have not paid for their security has increased in the past three months.  In November 2012, there were 12 people who did not pay for security cover. The figure rose to 15 in December 2012 and to 28 in January 2013.

The RTI also states that there are cases where the security cover was withdrawn but the dues still not cleared.

The topmost on the list of errants is from Wadhawan developers belonging to the HDIL group. Collectively, they owe the police Rs3,85,888 for December 2012 and Rs3,17,845 for January 2013. Vidya Morajkar, spokesperson for the Wadhawans, said that they had requested for security but no dues were outstanding.

The errants are prominent builders Abhishek and Abhinandan Lodha. Both owe around Rs65,875 for January 2013. In all, the total outstanding amount for January 2013 is Rs25,54,207.

For November 2012, the police data states that advocate Majid Memon topped the list in November 2012 with Rs1,27,500 dues pending. “I did not ask for security. They sent me the bill and later said it was an error. It was the police commissioner who felt that I should be given security,” said Memon.

Mohan Rawale, former MP from Shiv Sena, whose security cover was removed but he has not paid dues since 2010.  Viren Shah, an activist, whose security cover was removed in 2010 owes Rs88,552.  Spokesperson for Abhishek and Abhinandan Lodha, Neha Maheshwari, said: “We have no dues till December.

The amount due is only for January and we will pay it in stipulated time.”
Viren Shah said the court had provided him security and he didn’t want it. “I have taken up the matter with home ministry as they were pushing for security cover.”
Additional police commissioner for protection, Madhukar Pandey, said he would get back but did not.
