To get a true picture of the issue of heavy school bags plaguing the city, education minister Vinod Tawde visited the Parle Tilak Vidyalaya ICSE School and Parle Dixit Road Municipal School on Friday. There, he checked the weight of bags students were carrying and had a few suggestions for the authorities on how the weight can be reduced.

How do heavy bags affect kids' health?
Dr Mukesh Agarwal, head of the department of pediatrics, KEM Hospital, said, "Children do come with back or mild neck pain and school bags are one of the most common reasons behind it."

How heavy were the school bags?
The minister did not just check the weight of the school bags separately, but also checked the weight of the student with and without the bag. Tawde visited one private and one municipal school. At Parle Dixit Road Municipal School, he weighed school bags of students of grade 5 and 6. He found out that the weight of the bags were between 4.5 kg and 6 kg on an average.

What suggestions did Tawde make?
Tawde interacted with students and asked them how much the weight of their bag should be, and what books they want in the bags. The minister has suggested three options to minimize the weight of school bags. Among his tips were: Trying out something like the Tamil Nadu trimester pattern, allowing students to get tablets to school, which will automatically reduce the load of books in bags. His recommendations will be sent to the committee for further action.

What was Tamil Nadu's solution to this?
Tamil Nadu has a trimester pattern. The academic year is divided into three terms and the books are suitably divided into three parts making the bags lighter.
