Minister for Culture Vinod Tawde on Tuesday made it clear that before announcing the decision to confer Shivshahir Babasaheb Purandare the Maharashtra Bhushan award, there was a proper meeting of the committee concerned. The minutes of the meeting have also been recorded, he added.

While replying to a question on this issue during a press conference in Mantralaya, Tawde said, "If any committee member has said that a meeting was not held, I can only say that the minutes of the meeting have been recorded."

Reacting to NCP MLA Jitendra Avhad's criticism that the decision to award Purandare with Maharashtra Bhushan was mockery of history, Tawde said, "Actually, the person who has criticised is not worth taking seriously."

When pointed out that NCP president Sharad Pawar has also opined that even though it was the government's prerogative to select the person for the award, Purandare cannot be termed as a historian. To this Tawde said that there could be personal opinions whether Puranadare is a historian or not, but the government has decided to award him after adhering to all the criteria.

Replying to a question on the World Marathi literary meet, Tawde said that whereever there is programme of Marathi language aimed at propagating the language, his government would offer help. But at the same time, Tawde said, "It is not possible for the government to pay for such programmes or to writers to go abroad by spending from the state treasury. What we can do is to look for sponsors for such initiatives."
