Maharashtra: Villages to get more accurate weather forecast through AWS

The farmers in all the revenue circles would soon receive more accurate forecast of rains hailstorm and other parameters with the state government's decision to set-up automatic weather stations (AWS) for every revenue division.

Informing that the state government would set-up revenue circle wise AWS and has allotted Rs100 crore for the same, Khadse said that the tenders for the same would be finalized within a month and actual work for setting-up the AWS would start.

Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis held a review meeting of the agriculture department at Sahyadri Guest House on Thursday. Minister for marketing and cooperation Chandrakant Patil, minister of state for agriculture Ram Shinde, the agriculture commissioner Vikas Deshmukh and other officials were present for the meeting. The vice chancellors of all the agricultural universities were also present.

Khadse informed that with revenue circle wise AWS the village level accurate advisory could be provided to farmers. "The temperature along with wind speed relative humidity storm or windy air and hailstorm forecasts for 3 days would be possible. The predictions would have 70 to 80 per cent accuracy since the AWS would be linked to satellites," he added.

Khadse said that AWS would enable the government to implement Pradhanmantri crop insurance scheme effectively.
